Older Adults Education and Training

The Older Adults Education and Training Department provides enrichment opportunities through a variety of classes and programs for those navigating the changes in life associated with aging.  These programs address the complex and multi-dimensional needs of aging.

ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS

Physical activity has been proven to help the cardiovascular system, emotions and confidence.  In fact, exercising has helped people in their 80’s and 90’s get stronger, more independent and energetic.  The following activities have been designed for the mature adult.


TUESDAY

9:30-10:30 a.m. Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program

Instructor:  Patricia Michet
Fee:  $4.00 per class or 9 classes for $32.00

10:30-11:30 a.m. Yoga

Instructor: Patricia Michet
Fee $6.00 per class


THURSDAY

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

55 Alive.  AARP offers this excellent training course to all motorists older than 50 years of age. The eight-hour classroom refresher covers rules of the road, overcoming the effects of aging on driving skills, and accident prevention.  AARP-trained instructors teach the course. Completion enables older adults to reduce their auto insurance rates.
Class fee is $10, payable in cash at the first session.  Please call 354-1323, ext. 10 to register.  Classes meet from 12:30-4:30 pm., the fourth Wednesday and Thursday of the month.

           
Rules of the Road. The Rules of the Road Review Course is designed to give drivers the knowledge and confidence needed to renew or obtain a driver’s license.  The review course combines an explanation of the driving ability test with a practice written exam.  This free course helps students become more familiar with Illinois traffic laws and less anxious about driver’s license renewal.  Please call (708) 354-1323, ext. 10 to register.  The class meets 9:30-11:30 am quarterly on the first Thursday of the month.  The class schedule for 2007 is February 8, May 10, August 9 and November 8.
        

Beginning in January, The Southwest Suburban Center on Aging will offer monthly programs on “Learning to Cope with Chronic Illness.”  Among the illnesses to be addressed are; Rheumatoid Arthritis, Heart Problems, Diabetes, Sleep Deprivation, Osteoporosis, Stroke and Hearing Loss.  These programs will be offered by Dr. Hameed of Midwest Geriatrics Specialists and other professionals.
